Italian Lakes - Day 3 - Solden to Riva del Garda

Today is a "Drivers" day - three passes to negotiate both up & down the Alps.

Only about 200 miles but seven hours driving.

Left on time at 08.00 for the short drive to the Timmelsjoch Pass. Stopped several times on the way to the tops a view points.

A few yards after leaving the top you cross the Italian boarder, no signs to say so, and the pass now become the Passo del Rombo.
What a trip down!!! We started as car No. 4 but soon overtook the 2 in front and were now behind Marks Ferrari.
Mark booted it and Martin followed, the two of us left the others behind - what a roller-coaster journey down the mountain, I was hanging on for grim death & Martin was smiling from ear to ear at the bottom when we pulled over & waited for the other cars to catch up.

Re grouped & time for a quick coffee. On the road again at 10.15
Now a gentle drive trough the valley with lots of apple orchards & apples being sold for 1 euro a kilo. Spectacular views all the way. After a fuel stop it was then 70 km to the bottom of the Stelvio Pass. Lots of traffic and it took some time.

Arriving at the bottom it was clear for a while & then traffic :( 2 car got passed but not the rest unfortunatly. Surprised at the number of pedal cyclists and motor bikes going up the pass. Arrived at the top a little disappointed, but never mind there are more to come.

After lunch in the Tibet Restaurant and a wonder round the shops either side of the road, and taking photos of the general view, at 2.15 it was time to leave.
What an exhilarating drive down the other side, and some vey interesting road surfaces, and Armco - what is that? A few boulders marking the edge will do!!
Pedal cyclist were again a problem.
At the bottom we all regrouped agin and pulled into a small coffee shop, the look on the owners face when our 12 cars pulled in to his car park was a picture, and the coffee was very nice as well.

It was then a short drive to the Passo di Gavia. The scenery was very dramatic, there was very little traffic. Another great driving test. & no hold ups :) I think it was prettier than Stelvio.
It was then all the way down the other side if the mountains to the shores if Lake Garda, and what a change in temperature, very warm :)
After parking the cars, time for a quick freshen up & change before a quiet half hour stole in to town for a lovely evening meal.
After today most of the passengers where more tired than the drivers!!!

208 miles today
1004 miles total so far.
Location:Riva del Garda
